How It All Began
The Manitoba Ball Hockey Association was officially formed in 1978 by a small group of dedicated ball hockey players. The league began with six teams in Winnipeg. The following year, the MBHA joined the Canadian Ball Hockey Association and would host the Canadian Ball Hockey Championships that summer.

In 1980, Mr. Ross Cameron became the first Manitoban to be named as President of the Canadian Ball Hockey Association.

In 1984, Mr. Frank Raftis was named President for both the Manitoba and Canadian Ball Hockey Association, and was instrumental in bringing the 1985 Canadian Ball Hockey Championships to Winnipeg. As the host province, Manitoba won their first ever Gold Medal represented by the Winnipeg Grasshoppers.

In 1992, the MBHA faced some hard times when the association nearly folded due to a lack of league leadership. However, a group of dedicated players led by Tom Cowell, Dave Heaton, and Mark Leitch rescued the Winnipeg Ball Hockey League, and thus saved the MBHA. Through their work and the work of many others, the WBHL ( originally playing their games at "the pit") grew from 9 teams to over 30 Men's teams in just a few years.

In 1998, the MBHA was earned its membership in Sport Manitoba, the governing body of amateur sport in the province, and as a result has expanded the sport of ball hockey in five different regions within the province. Having established themselves as being the premier summer ball hockey league in Manitoba, the MBHA began to offer a variety of winter league options in the early 1990's which included the introduction of both the Winter Ball Hockey League and Westridge Sponge Hockey League.

Both of these leagues have grown dramatically over the past few years. Plans are currently under way for the development of a Youth Ball Hockey Program in the province. Currently, the MBHA has over 1200 active members playing in various leagues throughout the year. The future looks better than ever for ball hockey in the province of Manitoba!

Here's a list of some of the previous winners, and as we hunt down old boxes in basements and garages, we hope to update this page with some of the more "vintage" stats. Enjoy!
